Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Surgery
Problems such baggy eyelids (or droopy eyelids) or sagging skin under the eyes can portray a tired and older appearance. Many of these changes occur as part of the normal aging process as the skin loses some of its support and gravity prevails. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can reverse some of these unfavourable changes or features of the eyelids to provide a more refreshed and youthful appearance.
What is eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery (also called an eye lift or blepharoplasty), is a plastic surgery procedure intended to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids and bagginess from lower eyelids. This surgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons, however some of these problems can be genetically inherited and occur in a young person.
Blepharoplasty can address only the upper eyelids, only the lower eyelids, or both. This procedure can be performed alone or in combination with other aesthetic facial procedures.
How is a blepharoplasty performed?
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty procedure is usually performed by cutting along the natural skin lines (creases) of the eyelids, which helps hide the surgical scars from view. From these cuts, the surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying tissue and remove the excess fat and skin.
Surgery on the lower eyelids may be done using one of several techniques. For minor problems, a cut inside your lower eyelid is used to remove the fat. That cut will not be visible.
Eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours, if both upper and lower eyelids are done together, and not usually associated with significant discomfort. Your doctor will most likely use local anesthesia with oral sedation and prescribe pain medication to be used post-op.
Can eyelid surgery correct all unfavourable changes around the eyes?
Not all unfavourable changes or features of the eyelids require a surgical intervention. For example, to deal with the appearance of slight "crow's feet", Botox is the preferred treatment.
On the other hand, if your problem is more pronounced, eyelid surgery accompanied with other intervention, such as a face lift, may be required in order to achieve the desired results.
As part of the pre-operative consultation process, Dr Guertin will use his extensive experience and expertise to determine the best approach and technique.
Is blepharoplasty for everyone?
As with all cosmetic surgeries, the ideal candidates are people who are in good health and who have realistic expectations. Eyelid surgery aims to improve your appearance and provide a more refreshed appearance. However, the results may not be as noticeable as you expected and it definitely will not alter your facial structure.
Eyelid surgery is suitable for both men and women. Most patients are over the age of 35, but if baggy eyelids are due to a genetic factor, you may decide to do eyelid surgery earlier.
How long is the recovery after eyelid surgery
Following eyelid surgery, it is common to have some swelling and bruising around the eyelid that usually fades after 7 to 14 days. The duration varies from one person to another.
It is possible that you are prescribed eye drops, an ointment or simply the application of ice.
In general, the stitches are dissolvable, but since there are several techniques, it is possible that the surgeon uses a non-dissolvable suture that will be removed after a period of 7 days.
As soon as the stitches are removed, the incisions can sometimes be a little red, you can apply foundation or a concealer and you can resume your activities between one to two weeks after the procedure.
What are the possible complications from eyelid surgery?
Like any surgical interventions, complications can occur. In the case of eyelid surgery, the risk of any complication are minimal and very rare.
A blepharoplasty performed in optimal conditions typically has no complications, the incisions are practically undetectable and the healing period is relatively quick - 4 to 6 weeks. After a period of three to six months, you will be able to appreciate the full results.
Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgery that has a high satisfaction rate because the results are quick, durable and rarely require a second intervention before 12 years.
