Abdominoplasty: Tighter and Flatter Stomach

Like many other women, you've visited the gym, followed diets, lost weight, all without achieving the desired results of a flatter stomach. You look in the mirror and your silhouette does not seem to want to take back the effects of time. Your tummy is bulged, you have loose skin and excess fat around the midsection, and your muscles' ability to contract has weakened.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery as a last resort, here's everything you've always wanted to know without daring to ask.

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to remove loose abdominal skin, remove excess fat and make the abdomen more firm.

Abdominoplasty surgery also allows to restructure and strengthen or repair the muscles of the abdominal wall, it allows for the disappearance of unsightly folds, stretch marks and fat deposits on the flanks. The surgery is performed according to everyone's expectations.

It's important to note that abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss solution. In fact, it is recommended that any excess weight be shed before this cosmetic surgery.

What to expect from a tummy tuck?

The result is visible immediately after the procedure and within a week or two, after the swelling and scars have faded, you should be standing tall and confident in your new profile. However, it can take 6 to 12 months in order to appreciate a definitive final result.

You can expect the results of your surgery to last forever. The removed skin and fat will not reappear in the treated area. However, a tummy tuck will not help you lose weight and will not prevent future weight gain. You must have a good diet and exercise regularly. With a healthy lifestyle, you can expect the results of your surgery to last forever.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

There are several variations of abdominoplasty surgery, each designed to target certain areas of the body or specific issues. As part of the pre-operative consultation process, Dr Guertin will use his extensive experience and expertise to help determine the best approach for you. Dr Guertin typically performs the surgery with the patient under general anesthesia at his private clinic and the patient leaves the clinic the same day.

For a standard tummy tuck, sometimes called a full tummy tuck, the surgery typically lasts approximately 3 hours. A standard tummy tuck is appropriate for most patients, as it provides comprehensive tightening of the skin and muscles of both the upper and lower abdomen. This technique involves a horizontal incision between the hips and around the belly button. The surgeon then removes excess skin and tissue before pulling the remaining muscle and skin tightly over the stomach. The surgeon concludes with the re-positioning the belly button and closing the incision with sutures.

A mini tummy tuck typically takes 2 hours to perform. This procedure is used in select cases where patients do not need muscle tightening in the abdomen. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a small horizontal incision under the belly button. The surgeon then removes the extra skin and tightens the stomach muscles before closing the incision.

What do tummy tuck scars look like?

Abdominoplasty will potentially leave scars. Many patients are hesitant of getting a tummy tuck because of this. However, patients should not be afraid, because these incisions can be surgically placed so that they are not noticeable, even when you wear a bikini after the surgery.

The full tummy tuck will leave two scars: a horizontal scar above the pubic area - placed so as to be hidden in the undergarments. A second discreet scar around the belly button area.

What are the complications from abdominoplasty surgery?

Like any surgical interventions, complications can occur. In the case of abdominoplasty, the complications are usually associated with the wound and potential infections.

Tremendous progress has been made in the field of abdominoplasty in the recent years. The technique is less invasive, the anesthesia is less risky, the recovery time is shorter and the incisions are less noticeable.

Am I a candidate for an abdominoplasty?

As with all cosmetic surgeries, the ideal candidates are people who are in good health and who have realistic expectations. An abdominoplasty surgery aims to improve unfavourable changes caused by age, repeated pregnancy, by cesarean section or by significant weight loss.

Abdominoplasty is suitable for both men and women.

How long is the recovery after a tummy tuck?

Most patients return to normal activities after 1 to 2 weeks. It usually takes 1 to 2 months, however, until you can do any physical activities like exercising.
